Programme note:

My cat dozes on my lap, and I watch her breathe: the gentle rise-and-fall of her back; the soft sigh as she exhales; the sudden twitch as she chases a dream-mouse. I daydream also and hear music, slowly spiralling through sequences of harmonies. Each phrase expands on its predecessor: the music's world grows as it progresses from single lines to chords to fragments of song to echoing networks of busy filigree. Piano and harpsichord vie for attention, horn calls soar, pulse emerges, multiplies, and then dissolves. Suddenly the world is still again, and my cat forsakes me for a sunbeam.
